Love Horoscope for the Week of January 26

First of all, a word about Mercury retrograde. Yes, Mercury retrograde can mess up your communications and your short trips and your business dealings and such, but it’s not the end of the world. You can’t just go around blaming all of this week’s parade of (possibly) weird and unfulfilled urges on Mercury, even if it is conjunct the Sun and thus a little wonkier than usual. If you’re looking for the astrological culprit in your personal life (and your finances), this week we have Venus in Pisces, which starts on Tuesday.

Pisces is considered to be the “exalted” placement for Venus. In theory, this should make for a better and more loving world for all. In practice, it tends to make for a lot of unfulfilled longings and strange unexpected new impulses to love and be loved (and possibly to overspend). That’s even more the case this week, which Venus spends in conjunction to Neptune.

Some astrologers like to think of Neptune as a “higher octave” of Venus. Sometimes by “higher octave” what we really mean is “that grating squeal of unfulfilled love and desire within you has gone even more high-pitched.” None of this is particularly helped by Venus and Neptune being square to Saturn. Any planet being squared by Saturn is going to feel a pinch, but Venus and Neptune are particularly ill-equipped for the chill wind of practical limitations that Saturday brings. Keep this in mind on Date Night, since the exact Venus-Neptune aspect hits on Sunday.

So, what to make of all this? Be practical. Be sane. Think your romantic impulses through before you act on them. Oh, and: don’t sign up for any new credit cards or trade the family cow for a handful of magic beans.

As for the rest of the weekend dating scene: the Moon is in Gemini on Friday and enters Cancer on Saturday morning. At the very least, this should give us all the ability to talk about our problems one day, then commiserate over a drink the next.

Normally we could look to Mars to provide the energy to either pull us out of a slump or change the subject, but Mars is not being terribly helpful this week either. It’s still in Pisces as well, and this is not a terribly effective placement for the God of War to be in. Finally, just to throw in a dash of that “wild card” quality, there’s Jupiter retrograde in Leo, not taking any major aspects from anything except the occasional fleeting pass from the Moon.

If this week isn’t a prizewinner in your personal life, fear not. Conditions change again next week, and we can all get back to our regularly scheduled business… blaming things on Mercury retrograde.
