In a previous post, I discussed the significance of the progressed DC (and Ascendant) changing signs. But there are more indicators of changes via the progressed AC/DC, and these involve aspects to your natal planets. The progressed angles into new signs describe an overall shift in how you approach relationships. Aspects to the natal planets (whether the angles have changed signs or not) describe the quality of specific events.

As a review, the progressed DC is your evolving committed partnerships, and the progressed AC is your evolving identity. This evolution is based on where you’re starting from (your natal 1st/7th House cusps). But as your AC/DC axis progresses (read the previous post for information on the speed at which this happens) they can form new aspects (progressed aspects) to your natal planets. These aspects will last from 2 to 3 years (using an orb of 2 degrees). All major aspects (conjunctions, squares, oppositions, trines and sextiles) are considered.

Let’s say your AC/DC axis progresses to the point where it squares your natal 5th House (romance) Jupiter. This could mean the start of a major relationship that is tremendously exciting, but also a bit risky and unstable. 5th House Jupiter is a lot of fun, but can go overboard with indulgences. Jupiter’s expansive influence bumps up your evolving identity (progressed AC) making you feel confident, and a bit reckless. The square to your progressed DC can describe your new partner (a gambler/romantic/charmer/playboy) and the quality of the relationship. You must look at the rest of your chart, and your partner’s chart, for the whole story. But this influence can suggest a fun, sexy relationship that starts off with bang, but fizzles once the square to your natal Jupiter ends.

The quality of the relationship event is described by blending the type of aspect with the energy of the planet. A square creates tension, no matter what planet is involved. A square to Jupiter can manifest as a relationship that feels really good, but doesn’t run smoothly. Maybe you end up going into debt because you partied too much with your lover. Or maybe there is an unexpected pregnancy (5th House) that is initially stressful, even though it turns out to be a wonderful event. A square from the AC/DC axis to Pluto will feel compulsive and possibly unpleasant. Pluto’s intensity is magnified by the square’s tension. There may be a power struggle, as Pluto square your progressed AC indicates a challenge to your identity, via the relationship (progressed DC). If your natal Pluto is in your 11th House (the public) perhaps you become obsessed with someone you can’t have, and your obsession impacts your other relationships (maybe this person is a mutual friend). Or, someone you meet through acquaintances becomes obsessed with you, and ends up stalking you. Maybe there’s an intense, mutual love affair, but the magnitude of the transformation it triggers severs you from your friends.

A conjunction to your progressed DC will oppose your progressed AC (and vice versa). Harmonious or challenging relationship events will depend on the type of planetary energy that’s being united with your progressed AC or DC. If your progressed DC conjuncts natal Venus, you could meet a significant partner who embodies what you love (Venus), or who enables you to fully access the love you have to share. Your progressed AC opposing natal Venus describes the classic give-and-take between you (AC) and a partner. But if your progressed AC conjuncts natal Neptune, your identity will be dissolved. Who will take its place? Maybe you discover your higher calling, or maybe you lose yourself in a spiral of addiction. Obviously, the impact on an existing relationship, or the type of partner you meet, will vary according to how the conjunction plays out. In her book “The Art of Predictive Astrology” Carol Rushman describes two possible outcomes of the progressed relationship axis conjuncting Jupiter. One woman gets a divorce, and is quite happy about it. Another woman enters a marriage with a wealthy man.

Trines/sextiles are not as dramatic, but can still trigger positive changes, because they are harmonious. The quality of “positive” will depend on the nature of the planet. If your progressed DC trines your natal Moon (and your AC sextiles it) an existing relationship that’s been going through a rough patch can smooth out and become more intimate. Perhaps you open up to your partner, and finally express what you really need (Moon). Your partner reciprocates. Your evolving identity (AC) is in tune with your feelings, and this harmony is reflected in your partnership. A trine from natal Saturn to your progressed DC/sextile to your AC can usher in a period of stability. You may not meet someone new (unless other transits/progressions indicate this) but you can settle into a groove where you’re comfortable being on your own (if single) or comfortable in the existing structure of your relationship.

Progressions to natal planets represent the integration of your evolving love life with your natal potential. Progressions signify an internal readiness to experience (for example) your natal potential for expansion/freedom (aspect to natal Jupiter) or your natal potential for stability and self-reliance (trine to natal Saturn).Think of progressions as internal transits, and progressions to natal as an integration of who you are with who you are becoming. The integration is not always seamless, but any challenges that arise are part of the work in progress that is your evolving love life.
