Love Horoscope for the Week of October 19

Every culture has subjects that it finds painful, embarassing, or awkward to discuss. In Western Civilization, that subject is sex. For Western Astrologers, it’s the quincunx. The quincunx is an aspect that really just shouldn’t exist, but it does; it connects two planets in two Signs that have absolutely nothing in common (most of the time). This is an aspect that is sometimes so goofy in its effects that astrologers would rather skip the subject entirely and move on to how awesome a yod is (which is what happens when two planets in a sextile both quincunx a third planet). This is a bit like talking about how cute it would be to have twins while completely dodging the fact that having twins means twice as many diapers to change.

So, let’s be mature about this. I’d like you to sit down and we’ll discuss this week’s quincunxes like grown-ups, shall we?

Mars — as the ruler of sex, violence and ambition — is the kind of planet that could easily get out of hand if encouraged by the wrong kind of aspect from another planet. Although it begins the week in a trine with Pluto (which makes it powerful but controlled and efficient), as the week progresses it comes within quincunx range of Uranus in Aries. Even a positive aspect between these two planets can be a little anarchic, but a quincunx makes for potentially unpredictable mayhem, making things that normally purr at you bite you instead, and suddenly making the stable unstable. The quincunx reaches the exact degree on Friday night/Saturday morning, just in time for Date Night.

However, all is not lost… far from it, in fact. Although Mars and Uranus spend the week messing with your drives, Venus spends that same time building to a trine with Pluto, thus strengthening your heart. This aspect (just like the big Mars news this week) is also exact on Friday, at more or less the same time as Venus is conjunct Jupiter. So here’s the scenario: your drives are strong but confused and potentially hard to manage, and your capacity for love is amplified. Looks like the dating situation this weekend could get really interesting, couldn’t it? Let’s not spend too much time worring about how Venus is headed for its own quincunx with Uranus next week… instead, let’s just say “use protection”… and given the condition of Mars, that might include a bulletproof vest.

If you were hoping for one of the planets to jump in and keep you from doing something irrational, you’d better not count on it being the Moon. It spends Friday and Saturday in Pisces, which is a placement that’s a lot better at surfing whatever emotional wave comes its way than being rational and calculating. Given the impulsive brew we’ll all be floating in this weekend, we should perhaps be thankful the Sun enters Scorpio on Friday. Yes, I know, Scorpio has a reputation for being all about sex, but on a more important level — especially in this week’s case — Scorpio has a reputation for being able to keep its mouth shut when it counts. That particular talent could come in handy this week, couldn’t it?
