The Transiting Nodes Enter Pisces/Virgo: Relationship Truths

There’s a major change coming up, as the transiting Nodes shift from Libra/Aries to Virgo/Pisces. This will happen on October 9th for the Mean Nodes, and November 11th for the True Nodes. Here’s an article that outlines the differences between Mean and True. As the transiting North Node moves through your chart, it draws your attention to what’s ready for development. The transiting South Node signals what needs to be wrapped up or left behind. In the context of relationships, Nodal shifts can have a significant impact if they activate certain areas of your chart. And this change can also impact relationships at the collective level.

The Big Picture

In a general context, the South Node’s move into Pisces suggests stepping away from fantasies and disillusionment in relationships. As the sign of transcendence, Neptune-ruled Pisces is about the image, not the reality. Film and photography are ruled by this sign. These shifting images of beauty, sexuality, idealized “love” or victimization (Pisces is also the sign of the victim) deliver questionable messages. Most of us understand that not everything the media shows us is true. But it’s difficult to separate fact from fiction. The release and dissolution of certain illusions could be profound with this Nodal shift, since Neptune is transiting through Pisces. It will meet up with the South Node on November 17th, 2016 (True Node) and November 3rd, 2016 (Mean Node).

Mercury-ruled Virgo is about the details of reality, and the communication of that reality via the analysis of flaws. It’s not enough for Virgo to identify what’s wrong. The identification itself must be communicated. So it’s possible that this shift could reveal some major truths behind idealized male/female images and certain public relationships. This could also bring to light more stories about victims of abuse. Pisces is the archetype of healing, and Virgo delivers the medicine. These truths will be necessary to promote healing (Wounded Healer Chiron is also moving through Pisces).

Personal Details

On a personal level, this North Node shift (into the Virgo area of your chart) could get you thinking about the fine print. Virgo brings up tons of questions, which could be useful when applied to your partner, and yourself. What do you want from your partner? What do they want? What’s the next step? If you’re single, what exactly are you looking for in a relationship, and is it realistic? The Virgo North Node urges you to get it down in black and white.

The South Node (through the Pisces area of your chart) can trigger the release of painful past relationships. Or, it could dissolve a current relationship that’s no longer valid. It could also dissolve your unhealthy fantasies or undermining relationship habits. Maybe you carry around a precious fantasy that is slowly poisoning your life in the real world. This could be the dream lover that no mortal could ever match. It could be a fixation on someone who is not available. It could be your perception of yourself as a victim. I’m referring to the martyr attitude, where you continually get sucked into relationships that you know are full of red flags. And yet, the attraction is so strong that it’s “beyond your control.” But it’s better than nothing, and maybe if you just close your eyes and dive in, things will work out this time.

This transit could bring yet another fated/fatal attraction into your life. But now, you’ve got that transiting North Node as your guide forward. When in doubt, pay attention to the Virgo facts. Listen to what the other person is saying. When she says she’s not looking for anything serious, don’t assume you can change her mind. If you suspect he’s lying, look at his actions. Do they run counter to what he’s saying? These are the tells that give clues to your partner’s intentions, and they’re usually straightforward.

When the transiting Nodes activate your chart, the natal houses that the Nodes move through are only one piece of the puzzle. From the perspective of evolutionary astrology, you also need to look at the natal rulers of the signs the Nodes are moving through. These natal planets will give you more information about what you should be releasing (your natal Neptune) and what you should be discussing further (your natal Mercury). For example, you’ve got the transiting South Node moving through 7th House Pisces/transiting North Node through 1st House Virgo. This is about releasing relationships (7th House) that will never be solid. Easy, right? But natal Neptune is in your 3rd House (communication/intellect), so it’s actually about changing your information filter. When you meet potential partners, you may only hear what you want to hear, and conveniently block everything else out. What else? How about  changing the idea of yourself as perpetual victim. Clarifying the mixed messages you send when you’re in a relationship.

Your North Node task is to develop a clearer sense of self (1st House Virgo). But your natal Mercury is in your 2nd House (personal resources) so you will do this through precise communication/delineation of what you need. Not what you want, but what you need (you’re thinking practically). This will involve emotional security and financial issues. Maybe it’s time to get your books in order so you can become financially independent. Maybe you need to clarify your security needs, and make them non-negotiable. Create a list of your core values, and use them as your new relationship contract. Anyone who doesn’t honor those values will be shown the door. The signs that Neptune and Mercury are in will add even more details to the story.

The transiting Nodes don’t usually pack as much of a punch as transiting planets. You may not feel anything unless this is your Nodal return, or the Nodes pass over an angle. But if you pay attention, you’ll sense a change in the current. It’s up to you to swim with it, or against it.

You’re most likely to feel this in your love life if:

  • the Nodes move through your relationship houses (1st/7th Houses, 2nd/8th Houses, and sometimes 4th/10th or 5th/11th)
  • the Nodes conjunct/oppose or square a natal relationship planet (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) or the ruler of your 7th House
  • the Nodes conjunct/oppose or square your natal Nodes, and your natal Nodes are situated in your relationship houses
