Can You Turn Yourself Into Someone’s “Type”?

Everyone has a range of qualities that they’re attracted to in another person, and this is immediately indicated by the natal chart. When you’re attracted to someone, but you don’t match their qualities, it can be quite painful. But is it possible to adjust your natal energies (with help from transits and progressions) to “become” that person’s type?

First, a quick review of what describes a person’s attraction criteria. Obviously, the entire chart factors into this, but the main highlights include the 7th House ruler, and any planets in the 7th House. These will indicate what a person looks for in a committed partner. Along with this partnership criteria, a straight man or gay woman’s natal Venus describes who they are sexually attracted to, and a gay man or straight woman’s natal Mars describes who they are attracted to.

Potential

Shaun has Venus in Leo, in his 9th House of long-distance travel and exploration. He’s attracted to proud, attention-grabbing women who come from a different background — exotic superstars. His 7th House cusp is in Gemini, with ruler Mercury in 10th House Libra. He wants a bright, witty partner who is a social (Libra) queen in her field (10th House). Someone ambitious who looks, acts and talks beautifully. You meet Shaun at work, and there’s instant attraction on your side. And yet, he doesn’t seem to be that into you. You have no personal planets in Leo, Libra or Gemini, and your Venus is in 4th House Taurus (conjunct Saturn) along with your Moon, Mars and Mercury. You’re a restrained, introverted homebody. Yet, your Sun is in Aries, which is a Fire sign (like Leo) … and your Sun is in your 3rd house of communication, so isn’t that close enough to the Gemini-type partner he’s looking for?

Let’s take it a bit further. Your Sun has progressed into Gemini. You’ve “become” a Gemini (sort of) which matches the energy that he’s looking for in a partner. Plus, his Libra Mercury is being hit by an opposition from transiting Uranus and a square from Pluto, so that will transform his partnership ideas and open his eyes to your charms. Right?

Reality

At this point, know that if you even have to go through the above process, the attraction is probably not going to happen. Putting the astrology aside for a second, if Shaun isn’t attracted to you to begin with, the chances of him waking up and seeing the light are slim. The synastry inter-aspects must be there between your chart and Shaun’s chart. For example, his Mars on your Venus. Your Sun conjunct his Venus. Your Moon conjunct his 7th House cusp. You must “touch” the areas of his chart that indicate who he’s attracted to.

Here’s how your relationship with Shaun may look in real life: you hammer him with bursts of ideas (Sun in 3rd House, aggressive Aries) in an effort to get his attention, but he finds you too blunt. His 7th House ruler is in Libra, which is a harmonious sign. He invites everyone at work (including you) out to try that exotic new restaurant, and there’s going to be karaoke afterwards. You go along, because you want to show him that you can have a good time, but you’re stiff and uncomfortable for the entire evening. You hate karaoke, and the strange spices in the food give you heartburn. You’d rather be at home with a good book, eating the basic food that you grew up with.

But you’ve never stepped outside your comfort zone like this before, so what’s up with that? Your Sun has progressed into Gemini. You’re open to new ideas, and you want to experiment with different perspectives. But your natal chart still calls the shots, no matter what progression is happening. You can stretch your limits and reach your full potential, but that potential is based on your natal chart. And here’s the cherry on top of this disappointing cake: transiting Uranus and Pluto open Shaun’s eyes to a brand new love interest, but it’s not you.

The truth is, astrology can be twisted to match wishful thinking. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing when you try to match your chart with a prospective partner. It’s easy to interpret a series of unfolding transits/progressions as a growing connection between the two of you, while forgetting that the connection has to be there to begin with. Rather than trying to twist your energy into something that meets the other person’s needs, see what happens when you develop that energy for yourself. If you work your Progressed Gemini Sun by exploring new ideas in ways that make you comfortable, you’re using astrology as it’s meant to be used; as a tool to meet your potential, not someone else’s.
