What is a Lord??

Hey everyone, I’m kind of new to astrology and this forum, so please bear with me!!

I’m just confused as to what a lord is? If I hear someone say “the Lord of the first house (Lagna) in the fourth house,” does that mean mars (planet of Aries) is in their fourth house, or does it mean that they have the sign of Aries occupying their fourth house? (Meaning they are Capricorn ascendent).
